Description

Drive through the dense forest of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali in Mumbai and visit the Kanheri Caves which are buddhist caves comprise of monastries, halls, worship places used by Buddhist Monks of ancient India, between 1st century BC and 11th century AD. This Buddhist Monastery was a Buddhist University and over a hundred caves had been excavated. There are 109 caves carved from the basalt rock. The hall of the caves contains the Stupa, which is a Buddhist Shrine. Since the Kanheri forest was on the trading route, the Buddhist monks converted the mountain into a monastery.
