Description

One hundred kilometers away from Mumbai is Lonavala, a very lovely and popular hill station, pass it and nestled in the Western Ghats are Karla and Bhaja caves - Buddhist caves built on the trading routes.

The Karla Caves has been built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. Climbing up the mountain to see Karla caves, you have a breathtaking view of the green expanse below. The Chaitya hall with its wooden facade and wooden ribs and rafters is truly beautiful. And the mountain has been excavated to house Viharas up to five storeys.

Whilst at Karla Caves, you may also visit the shrine of the Hindu Mother Goddess Ekvira - the Patron Goddess of the fisherfolks who come to her with offering of sweets, flowers, poultry and goats.

Bhaja Caves are probably the first Buddhist caves built in our region. They were built in the 2nd century BC and are in comparison, very simple.
