San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture and unique in its preservation of more than a dozen tower houses, which form a dazzling skyline in this ancient hilltop setting. The town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, is encircled by three walls that dominate the ruins of a fortress dismantled in the 16th century. There are eight entrances into the city, but the main gates are Porta San Giovanni on the ridge extending south towards Siena and Pisa, and Porta San Matteo to the northwest toward Florence and Chianti.

The main streets are Via San Matteo and Via San Giovanni, which cross the city from north to south. At the heart of the town are the Piazza Duomo, on which stands the Collegiate Church and its medieval Town Hall with Torre Grossa, and the Piazza della Cisterna with its towers and a central well.

Tour is available Mondays and Thursdays. You will meet in front of Porta San Giovanni, and walk for two hours with a guide who brings the history of this postcard-perfect town to life.
