Rione Testaccio is the place to go in if you really wish to discover what it is like to live in modern-day Rome. Here all of the people know one another and the business are family-owned having been handed down through the generations. You can stroll and explore this lively district for hours, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying being in the company of the friendly locals. Craft shops and restaurants serving traditional Roman cuisine abound and there is a large open-air market which is the very soul of Testaccio.

This area is also noted for its places of artistic and cultural interest. There is the famous Artist’s Cemetery and the ancient slaughterhouse that has been transformed into the Macro Museum. However, a few steps from Testaccio you will find the only surviving ancient Roman Pyramid, remains of the city walls and gate.

Testaccio is a traditional working class neighbourhood now recognised as one of the most “hip” places in Rome. Some of the highlights of this Testaccio tour include: a visit to the local market to taste the best of Rome’s street food, savouring some of the regional delicacies and experiencing a little of everyday life in Rome; discovering the numerous cheese, salumi and Italian pastry shops and of course sampling some of the produce; seeing the hill built by the ancient Romans with layers of amphorae shards and a visit to the ancient slaughterhouse now converted into a marvellous art installation complex. We call at an historic inn to try some delicious pasta, meet the chef and learn a little about his traditional recipes and also visit the Artist’s Cemetery that the poet Shelley said would make you fall in love with death.

This three-hour tour includes five tasting locations with at least eight samplings and one wine tasting. We are sure this will be the best action-packed three hours of your visit to Rome.
